In short
The three Enneagram 9 subtypes are the Self-Preservation Nine (SP 9), the Social Nine (SO 9), and the One-to-One Nine (SX 9, also called Sexual). All three forget themselves to keep the peace, but the Self-Preservation Nine does it through comfort and routine, the Social Nine through tireless work for the group, and the One-to-One Nine by merging with one person.
Overview
One Nine, three instincts
Every Nine carries the passion of sloth, which means self-forgetting far more than laziness: a quiet inertia about their own priorities, feelings, and anger. The lead instinct, one of the three instincts, decides what the Nine forgets themselves into. The Self-Preservation Nine forgets by substitution. The hard conversation or the overdue checkup is never refused, only set beside something easier and more pleasant, and the easier thing wins. The One-to-One Nine forgets through fusion, drifting into a partner's weekend and a friend's opinions until the question what do you want? lands like a trick.
The Social Nine forgets through work, which is why they are the countertype. The calendar is full, the hands are never idle, and their own wants sit at the bottom of a list that never gets that far. So one Nine is sorting screws into jars in the garage at four in the afternoon, perfectly content. One is stacking chairs after the event and checking that the quiet guest got home. One is humming along on a long drive while someone they love picks the music and the exit. Only the first looks like the classic easygoing Nine.

How the three Nines differ
| SP 9 | SO 9 | SX 9 | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Where attention goes | Routine, home, food, absorbing solo projects | The group, and keeping everyone in it okay | One partner or close friend |
| How the self-forgetting shows | Easier things replace the hard ones | Own needs buried under effort for others | Taking on another's moods, tastes, and plans |
| Looks like from outside | Easygoing, private, quietly stubborn | Busy, cheerful, dependable | Warm, affectionate, gentle |
| Often mistaken for | Five, or the Self-Preservation Six | Social Three or Two | One-to-One Two or Four |
| Under stress | Digs in, and the no gets lived slowly | Takes on more, smiles brighter | Holds closer, loses their own view further |
| Growth edge | Spotting the substitute, then doing the real thing | Letting one task stay undone each week | Doing one small thing alone, by choice |

The Nine people don't recognize
The Social Nine is the countertype, and the Nine most likely to be told they can't possibly be a Nine. Most descriptions of the type are slow, easygoing, and a little withdrawn, and this one joins, organizes, mediates, and covers the gaps, often as the most active member of every group they belong to. They tend to test as a Three or a Two. The Three confusion is the common one, since both are energetic and capable, but a Social Three works to be seen as successful and tracks rank, while a Social Nine works so the group stays whole and would rather not stand out from it. Take away the recognition and the Three loses steam, while the Nine barely notices it was gone (see 3 vs 9). The One-to-One Nine gets mistyped too, usually as a Two, because so much of their inner life is organized around one bond (see 2 vs 9).

Questions worth sitting with
- When you lose track of yourself, is it into a comfortable routine, into work for the group, or into the person you're closest to?
- When a plan changes without warning, do you quietly dig in, pick up the slack so things keep running, or go along with whatever your partner or friend prefers?
- Which feels most like rest: a familiar evening at home, a group that's finally getting along, or being close to the right person?
- If someone asked what you want right now, would you name something comfortable, something the group needs, or what the other person wants?

Questions
Common questions about the Type 9 subtypes
Which Enneagram 9 subtype am I?
Take the instinct test first: 21 statements, about 3 minutes, and it shows which instinct tends to lead. If you're unsure you're a Nine, start with the full test, especially if you're busy and capable and have been reading about Threes. Then read the three subtype pages and ask what you tend to forget yourself into.
Which Type 9 subtype is the countertype?
The Social Nine. A countertype runs its type's passion against the grain, and where the Nine's self-forgetting usually looks like slowing down, the Social Nine's runs through constant effort for the group. The wish for everyone to be at peace, and the habit of putting their own needs last, are still a Nine's.
Which Nine subtype is the most stubborn?
Usually the Self-Preservation Nine. They are easygoing until a plan changes, and then it turns out how firmly they are planted. The resistance rarely comes as an argument. It shows up slowly, in the schedule. The Social Nine tends to give way for the group's sake, and the One-to-One Nine for the person they love.
