About this site

enneagram.dev is a free, in-depth guide to the Enneagram, built for one purpose: helping people understand why they do what they do, and find one concrete next step to grow.

What we believe about the Enneagram

The Enneagram is a map of nine motivational patterns—each built around a core fear and a core desire. We think it’s most useful as a mirror, not a box: a way to notice your habits of attention and the stories you tell yourself, so you can choose differently.

We approach it secularly and with psychological grounding. We cover its history factually—including the thin empirical base under some of its claims.

Not a clinical instrument

The test and everything on this site are tools for self-reflection. They are not a psychological assessment, diagnosis, or substitute for care from a licensed professional. If you’re struggling, please reach out to someone qualified to help.

How the test works

  • 90 statements, ten for each type, written around motivation and inner experience rather than behavior.
  • Each type’s score is how strongly you endorsed its statements, from 0 to 100%.
  • Your wing is the higher-scoring of your type’s two neighbors (or “balanced” if they’re within 3 points).
  • Your tritype is the top type in each of the three centers, in order of score.
  • When your top two types are within 5 points, a short tiebreaker round helps separate them.

All writing on this site is original. Type names like “The Reformer” are standard in the field; we don’t reproduce proprietary instruments or descriptions.

Editorial standards

How the writing on this site is made, so you can weigh it accordingly:

  • Original, structured, and consistent. Every type, wing, pairing, and guide is written against the same structure and the same core reference data (centers, wings, growth and stress lines), so pages don’t contradict each other.
  • AI-assisted drafting. First drafts are written with AI assistance from that structure and our editorial brief, then checked, edited, and corrected by people. We say so because you deserve to know.
  • Claims are hedged and sourced. Where we mention research or history, we link the source and say plainly where the evidence is thin. See how the test works.
  • Dated and corrected. Every article shows when it was last updated. Spot an error? Email editor@enneagram.dev and we’ll fix it.
