In short
The 278 tritype combines Type 2, the Helper, Type 7, the Enthusiast, and Type 8, the Challenger. People with this combination tend to be generous, energetic, and forceful, quick to throw themselves at people and experiences alike. It covers every order of the three numbers (278, 287, 728, 782, 827, 872).
Overview
What the 278 tritype shares
Nothing about the 278 is small. The Type 2 brings an open hand and an eye for what others need. The Type 7 brings an appetite for experience and a talent for turning a plan into a good time. The Type 8 brings the energy to make things happen and the nerve to override anyone in the way. All three move outward, toward people and toward life, and none of them is much inclined to wait.
Picture a road trip where a tire blows out on a two-lane highway. Most of the car groans. The 278 has the spare half on before anyone else has found the jack, has called a cousin who knows a tire shop in the next town, and by the time the shop is finished has turned the delay into a long lunch at a picnic table out back, which they insist on paying for. Years later, the blowout is the part of the trip everyone still tells.
As a tritype, a newer lens rather than settled theory, the 278 suggests generosity with a large engine behind it. The warmth is real, the appetite is real, and so is the need to steer. What the combination struggles with is the slow, quiet register of life: grief that can't be fixed, a friend who needs company more than rescue, an evening with nothing on the calendar.
One type from each center
How 2, 7, and 8 work together
The Eight's answer to the gut center (stay in charge, never be at anyone's mercy) gives the 278 its momentum and its habit of taking over. With a Seven alongside, anger tends to be hot, quick, and gone by dinner; with a Two alongside, it flares most often in defense of someone else. A 278 rarely sulks. They say what's wrong at full volume, expect the same candor back, and are honestly baffled when someone is still hurt the next morning.
The Two meets the heart center's worry about worth by giving, and in the 278 the giving is lavish: the round of drinks, the spare room, the job lead passed along before anyone asked. The Seven and Eight make it expansive and a little proud. Shame comes in sideways, as a flash of hurt when their generosity isn't matched, or when someone they once carried no longer seems to need them.
The Seven handles the head center's fear by keeping options open and moving toward pleasure and possibility. In the 278 it supplies the optimism and the reflex to recast any setback as an adventure. It also steers them away from anything that would hold them still inside pain. When a friend's loss can't be fixed, the Seven's instinct is to plan something cheering, which can be exactly right or can miss the point entirely.
The six orders
When each type leads
The first number is the core type: its wings and its growth and stress lines are the ones that apply. The other two are supporting strategies, and their order matters less.
When the Two is the core type, in 2-7-8 and 2-8-7, this is a Helper with an unusually big, assertive personality. The first number is the core type, which means the Two's wings and lines (toward Four in growth, toward Eight under stress) are the ones that apply, while the Seven and Eight color the delivery. A 2-7-8 is playful and social, the host who keeps everyone fed and laughing past midnight. A 2-8-7 is more commanding: they look after people by organizing them, and can bristle when their help is turned down.
Type 2: The Helper →When the Seven leads, in 7-2-8 and 7-8-2, the core drive is freedom and experience, and the Two and Eight decide how other people fit into it. A 7-2-8 brings friends along on everything and takes real pleasure in other people's pleasure. A 7-8-2 is bolder and more self-directed, the person who quits to start something risky and recruits everyone they know to help, generous with the upside and short with doubters.
Type 7: The Enthusiast →When the Eight leads, in 8-2-7 and 8-7-2, the person is a force first: protective, direct, and used to being in charge. An 8-2-7 leads like a patron, taking care of their people with a heavy hand and an open wallet. An 8-7-2 is more appetite than caretaking, chasing big experiences and big wins, with warmth that comes out in bursts of generosity more than in steady attention.
Type 8: The Challenger →You might recognize
Signs of the 278 tritype
- 1They pick up the check, often before anyone else has seen it arrive.
- 2Their idea of comforting a sad friend usually involves getting that friend out of the house.
- 3They get restless in a room where nothing is happening, and solve it by making something happen.
- 4Their generosity and their insistence tend to arrive in the same gesture.
- 5They forgive quickly after a blowup and sometimes expect everyone else to recover just as fast.
- 6Unscheduled time makes them uneasy, so the calendar stays full.
Where it pulls
Where the three strategies disagree
Attention to you, attention to what's next
The Two notices the person in front of them, while the Seven is already half-planning what comes next. A 278 can be deeply attentive for ten minutes and then visibly elsewhere. Friends who need sustained presence, through an illness or a slow recovery, may feel that drop-off more than the 278 realizes.
Giving as steering
The Two wants to help and the Eight wants to be in charge, and in a 278 the two can fuse into help with an agenda. The guest room is free, and the guest will be on the household's schedule. The generosity is sincere. It can also quietly make the 278 the center of every arrangement it touches.
Big appetite, tired body
The Seven and Eight both lean toward more (more plans, more intensity, more of whatever is good) and the Two adds more people to look after. The combination rarely notices its own limits until the body enforces them, with a cold that becomes pneumonia or a crash after a long season at full speed.
Harder to reach
What this combination has less of
The 278 tends to miss the quiet, inward strategies. From the head center, the Five's ability to withdraw, observe, and conserve energy is mostly absent, and so is the Six's habit of thinking through what could go wrong before committing. From the heart center, the Four's capacity to stay with sadness without trying to lift it is rare here, as is the Three's measured attention to how things look to outsiders, which sometimes leaves a 278 surprised by how loud they came across. In the gut center, there is less of the Nine's patience to let a situation unfold on its own and less of the One's restraint, the inner voice that asks whether this is the right thing to do or only the exciting one.
One thing to try
A growth step for the 278
Once a week, keep one evening with no plan, no guests, and no project. Spend at least part of it doing something slow and solitary (a walk without a podcast, cooking for one, sitting on the steps), and pay attention to what arrives when nothing is competing for your attention. For a 278 it is often a feeling the schedule was holding off: a loneliness, an old grief, a worry about someone far away. You don't have to do anything with it. Letting it in on purpose, in small doses, makes it less likely to ambush you in the middle of a party.

Common questions about the 278 tritype
Is 278 a rare tritype?
Honestly, nobody can say. There is no reliable population data for tritypes, and online impressions are skewed by who shows up to talk about the Enneagram. A loud, sociable combination like the 278 may simply be more visible than others. If you want real numbers, our type distribution page tracks live shares among people who have taken the Enneagram.dev test.
How is a 7-2-8 different from a 2-7-8?
The core type changes. A 2-7-8 is a Two whose worth is tied to being needed; they may be the life of the party, but the deeper fear is being unwanted. A 7-2-8 is a Seven whose deeper fear is being trapped in pain or boredom; they love people, and freedom still comes first. One practical tell: when a friend needs a long, dull favor, the 2-7-8 tends to stay to the end, and the 7-2-8 tends to find a clever way to make it shorter.
How do I find out if I'm a 278?
Your report from the free test includes a tritype alongside your type and wing, made of the top-scoring type in each of the three centers. If yours comes back 278 in some order, read the Two, Seven, and Eight pages and check them against how you actually behave when you're helping, when you're bored, and when you're angry. Close scores within a center deserve a second look, since the runner-up may fit you better.
