Am I a 4 or a 5?

Type 4 vs Type 5

The Individualist or The Investigator?

Fours and Fives both withdraw and go deep. The difference is what they're protecting: a Four protects their identity, a Five their capability.

Take the 6-question tiebreaker

By the enneagram.dev editorial team · Updated

In short

Fours withdraw into feeling; Fives withdraw into thinking. A Four wants, eventually, to be deeply understood for who they are, while a Five wants to understand the world and be left enough time and energy to do it. If being seen as ordinary hurts more than being seen as incompetent, lean Four; if the reverse is true, lean Five.

Why they get mixed up

The overlap

Fours and Fives sit next to each other on the circle, so each can be the other's wing, and the 4w5 and 5w4 can look nearly identical. Both types are private, introspective, and drawn to the unusual. Both often felt like outsiders growing up, prefer a few deep connections to a crowd, and need a lot of time alone. Both can spend years on a niche interest that the people around them don't quite get.

The stereotypes don't help. The moody artist and the detached scientist are caricatures, and plenty of people break them. Many Fives are artists, musicians, or writers, and many Fours are rigorous thinkers. If you sort by interests or careers, you'll get it wrong often. Sort by what happens to your feelings instead. Fours are in the heart center, where the core issue is identity and being seen. Fives are in the head center, where the core issue is fear, managed by understanding things and conserving resources.

Tests struggle here too. Items about introversion, needing space, or feeling different score high for both types. A Five who has done a lot of emotional work can score high on Four items about feeling things deeply, and a Four with a strong Five wing can score high on analysis and privacy. Look at what you do with the inner life, not just how rich it is.

The tells

How to tell them apart

  1. What you do with a strong feeling

A Four goes into it. The feeling is information about who they are, and they want to know what it means, often by expressing it. A Five steps back and observes it from a distance, and frequently processes it later, alone, once the moment has passed. A Four amplifies a feeling to find what's true; a Five sets it aside to see clearly.

  2. Hoping to be found or wanting to be left

Both withdraw, but the retreat has a different shape. A Four's withdrawal often carries a quiet hope that the right person will notice and come after them. A Five's withdrawal is the point: they're recharging and thinking, and being followed would defeat the purpose.

  3. Where each goes under stress

Under prolonged stress, Fours move toward Two: they reach out, over-give, flatter, and need reassurance that they're still wanted. Fives move toward Seven: the mind speeds up and scatters, jumping between projects and distractions instead of focusing. If stress pulls you toward people, consider Four; if it pulls you into restless mental noise, consider Five.

  4. Signature versus mastery

A Four wants their work to say something about them—a style, a voice, a thing only they could make. A Five wants their work to be right, and is often content to stay anonymous if the understanding is sound. Being called derivative wounds a Four. Being called wrong is what gets under a Five's skin.

  5. What you need from someone close

A Four wants to be seen all the way down and can push and pull when they don't feel understood. A Five wants their space respected and their limits honored, and shows love by sharing time, knowledge, and attention on their own terms. Fours sometimes experience Five partners as withholding; Fives sometimes experience Four partners as a lot. The 4 and 5 pairing explores this.

Ask yourself

Questions worth sitting with

  • When you pull away from people, is it more that you feel no one quite understands you, or that you need to conserve your energy and think?
  • When a strong emotion hits, is it more that you go into it to find out what it means, or that you step back and examine it from a distance?
  • When you compare yourself to others, is it more that you notice what they have that you lack, or that you notice how much they ask of you?
  • When you share something you've made, is it more that you want it to show who you are, or that you want it to be accurate and well understood?
  • When a relationship feels hard, is it more that you need to feel truly seen, or that you need room to breathe?

Questions

Type 4 vs Type 5: common questions

Is a 4w5 the same as a 5w4?

No, though they share a lot. A 4w5 is a Four at the core, organized around identity and feeling, with a Five's privacy and intellect. A 5w4 is a Five at the core, organized around understanding and conserving energy, with a Four's creativity and depth. The core motivation decides it.

Can you be both a 4 and a 5?

Not as a core type, but Four (heart center) and Five (head center) often appear together in a tritype, and one is often the other's wing. That's why many people relate strongly to both pages.

Why did my test say 5 when I relate to 4?

Items about privacy, introversion, and intellectual depth load on both types, and many Fours score high on them. Read the Four and Five pages and notice which core fear lands harder, then retake the test answering for how you handle feelings.

Are Fours and Fives compatible?

They often understand each other's need for depth and solitude, which is rare. The friction is usually emotional pace: the Four wants feelings shared now, the Five needs time first. See the 4 and 5 pairing.
